Zabala - Track 12 - Ninna nanna del maggio

When I was a kid, May was by far my favorite month. The days got longer, and you could play in the backyard until late at night. May in Italy is also the month of Mary. A time of the year in which families pray the rosaries, that I always tried to avoid. My parents left me a lot of freedom and despite having soon reached a strong detachment from religion, I have always remained tied to that spirituality and faith that are charity and caress as in a sweet lullaby. There is a passage in the song that I am very attached to:
“I pray Jesus to take the pain away
That the fishermen do not get lost in the sea
That there is a place for those who die to go
I pray Jesus to be able to find you".
This ending makes me think of my great friend Franz, and of praying to find him sooner or later in a seaside town.

Ninna nanna del maggio

words & music by Andrea Parodi

Ninna nanna Ninna e…
Ninna nanna Ninna a…

E adesso dormi mia dolcissima Costanza

Ninna nanna Ninna e…
Ninna nanna Ninna a…

Zabala - Track 11 - Maya dei girasoli

Over the past few months, I have released this song as a wish to students who went back to school in person after remote learning due to the pandemic. We are living in a time of severe limitations and renunciations. A time suspended, subtracted, that will not be given back to us. This song is an invitation to never stop dreaming, marveling, and hoping. We made a video with the illustrations of Elisabetta Ferrari and with the images of my sons Woody and Geordie, with their lively and smiling eyes that light up in front of the moon in the sky and the hill that changes color.

Maya dei girasoli

words & music by Andrea Parodi

E in queste giornate d’autunno

E in queste giornate d’autunno

One of the first stories I’ve ever read as a child was the one about Margherì, a woman who withered and died at the end of spring. Eventually the story has a happy ending. As a matter of fact, the following spring Margherì would be born again. but I did not accept this so-called happy ending. I wanted that Margherì, not a reborn Margherì. The whole meaning of life lies in this small passage. Life is just a flower. Beautiful, fragile, defenseless. What we can do is be careful not to step on it, protect it, paint it, sing it.

È solo un fiore

words & music by Andrea Parodi

So che tu ritornerai

È solo un fiore, è solo un fiore, è solo un fiore

Fare finta di essere normale
L’odore della pioggia nei prati
Con tua figlia la notte di natale
A pettinare i suoi capelli bagnati

È solo un fiore, è solo un fiore, è solo un fiore

Con le margherite la primavera
I colori dell’aria la mattina
La tua prima maglietta di calcio vera
Il profumo del pane e della benzina

È solo un fiore, è solo un fiore, è solo un fiore

Zabala - Track 09 - Tutti i pesci del mare

“Wake her up with a smile and the ray of sunshine, which filters through the shutters on her pillow
Wake her up with the scent of rosemary, with coffee in the air, with a violin
And fields full of snow and sunflowers, let her fall in love, let her fly”.
A hymn to life and beauty and the daily search for light and fullness.

Tutti i pesci del mare

words & music by Andrea Parodi

E canta insieme a lei a squarciagola
Non farla sentire mai da sola

E se la vedi stanca falla sedere
Se è triste dalle da bere

Falle trovare sempre vicino agli occhiali

Zabala - Track 08 - Brasile

Ballads have the power to tell stories that would otherwise need an entire movie to be explained, in mere minutes. I am very fascinated by this type of writing which has important references to songs such as Pancho & Lefty and Il Bandito e il Campione. Eric Taylor was a master at writing these ballads. I remember the night I played the song Brasile in front of him and Luigi Grechi, an Italian songwriter, at one of Townes Van Zandt's legendary after-festivals at the Amandla Pub in Italy. That night, my friend Samuele fell in love with this song. Since then, every time I play this song, I dedicate it to him. As he had said that I should have Neilson Hubbard produce it. And no sooner said than done, Neilson twisted this song into a mystery about a surreal journey from the port of Livorno to that of Rio De Janeiro. The journey of a man who decides to start a new life in a remote land. But the past always comes knocking as he has to return to Italy. As he is sentenced to prison in Verona. But that mysterious land had entered so deeply into him that his cellmates and warders called him Brazil. And at the end of the story there is still time for a daring escape in search of freedom and another new life.

Brasile

words & music by Andrea Parodi

Songwriters: the sadder, the better. Townes Van Zandt and Claudio Lolli, just to name two. My repertoire of songs is divided between heart-wrenching poems, and fictional stories and ballads. I hardly wrote love songs in the past. Then Elena came like a raging river in my life. Like a shooting star in the storm. We moved in together into our house in Figino Serenza, near lake Como, and shortly after we discovered that Woody was coming. "There is someone who is coming. We will give him love and the rest we will learn along the way ". When we returned from Texas we eventually got married in Italy, in 2015. In the woods of a place that has always had a special meaning to me. As it has always hosted the summer Festival de “L’Unità”. Many years ago, when we still didn't know each other, I happened to meet Elena's gaze at Festa dell’Unità. I still remember the feeling. It was impossible to explain it in words without music. So, I wrote a love song about that very same feeling.

words & music by Andrea Parodi

I wrote this song on Monday November 15th, 2004 at 5 pm in the Baia Flaminia beach in the east coast of central Italy, Pesaro. That beach was always full of young people playing beach tennis, surfing, and eating the traditional piadina flatbread. However, the bay was deserted in autumn, with the boats secured under a huge promontory, and the silence broken only by the song of the seagulls.

Se vedessi la baia ora

words & music by Andrea Parodi

E vorrei poter restare

E i sogni sono solo sogni
E tu, tu non sei più tu

Se vedessi la Baia ora…

Zabala - Track 05 - Gabriela y Chava Moreno

I grew up in Cantù, Northern Italy, a few miles from the border to Switzerland. However, the border that has always evoked strong emotions in me is the one between the United States and Mexico. I set this story on the road along the Rio Grande. It is about the journey of a desperate woman who traveled from Las Cruces to Corpus Christi. It is my tribute to those places where flavors and aromas mix with the endless skies and sunsets. Mariachi and nortena music meet folk and rock; one of my favorite songs of all time in this tex mex style is Bob Dylan's, Romance in Durango. And I’m humbled to have Scarlet Rivera's violin along with Joel Guzman's accordion in Gabriela’s journey.

Gabriela y Chava Moreno

words & music by Andrea Parodi

Guarda come è cresciuta dall’ultima volta

Gabriela arrossisce soltanto e poi scompare

Entrò all’osteria Las Manitas a bere e mangiare

Zabala - Track 04 - Where the wild horses run

The story goes that Billy the Kid was killed in Fort Sumner on July 13, 1881 at the hands of Pat Garrett. A month later a man named John Miller married a Mexican woman in Las Vegas, New Mexico. Whoever saw him that day, including the priest who married the couple, swore it was Billy the Kid. Sometime later, the Pecos River overflowed into the Santa Fe cemetery where Billy the Kid was buried, and his body was never found. Each verse of this song is a different testimony of a character that feeds this legend.

Where the wild horses run

words & music by Andrea Parodi - english adaptation by Jono Manson

John Miller, walked straight through the town
But the kid was already six feet underground
Holding the hand of a Mexican girl
Blood on his pistol, with a handle, made of pearl
What does it matter if he has another name
I saw it in his eyes and I’d know him all the same
We waved goodbye as he rode out of sight, into the golden west

Hey, lonesome stranger won’t you stop and rest a while
Sit and quench the thirst of a thousand dusty miles
In Quemado, at our humble restaurant
We will pour some wine, and feed you most anything, that you could want
But let’s not speak about our old kitchen hand
He walks burning desert, and he is forever banned
From this place, passed down to me though time, my father’s father’s house

Where the wild horses run
Where the wild horses run
Where the wild horses run
Where the wild horses run

I gave him shelter, and half of my herd
If you think he is an outlaw, I don’t want to hear a word
My name is Jesus and my cattle graze these plains
And since he up and left us, it's just a memory, that remains
But I’ll never tell, so don’t even try to ask
About which trail he’s riding, or the whiskey in his flask
With his crooked shoulder and eyes of piercing blue, like the sky at sunset

Where the wild horses run
Where the wild horses run
Where the wild horses run
Where the wild horses run

I was just a boy, when I shipped off to war
Now I am resurrected, like my father before
Marched into Germany, with a rifle in my hands
I was born in April, without a mother, without a flag, without a land
Indian blood runs through my veins
I was raised by a man, who went by many names
Who always warned me, “Stay clear of that gun, and my old saddle bags"

They call me Isadora and if you are looking for that man
Billy the Kid was my husband, I still wear his wedding band
Sheriffs and bankers tremble, even to this day
There's a notch on his gun for every man, he blew away
My life began back in 1881
A girl without a name, before this story had begun
I was dead and gone, when you brought me back, brought me back from the flames

Where the wild horses run
Where the wild horses run
Where the wild horses run
Where the wild horses run

Là, dove corrono i cavalli
Dove corrono i cavalli
Dove corrono i cavalli
Dove corrono i cavalli

Dove corrono i cavalli

John Miller si presentò all'altare

Dove corrono i cavalli

Dove corrono i cavalli

Dove corrono i cavalli

Poco più che ragazzo son partito soldato
E come mio padre son resuscitato
Nelle mie vene scorre sangue indiano
Allevato da un bandito o un mandriano
Mi diceva sempre "Non toccare quel fucile e quel baule"

Dove corrono i cavalli

Billy the Kid è proprio mi marito
Perciò sceriffi e banchieri cominciate a tremare

Dove corrono i cavalli

Zabala - Track 03 - I piani del signore

A Murder ballad set in North Carolina; a story of a man obsessed by the words of a bigoted mother who told him since he was a child, that someone’s fate depends more on the will of the Lord rather than on our choices. Therefore, every step of the main character’s life was conditioned by his mother’s beliefs until 1953, when she dies of a heart attack a few months after he murdered his own wife.

I piani del signore

words & music by Andrea Parodi

In North Carolina quand’ero bambino

I always loved films that give voice to a city, especially New York, so that it is not just a background; instead, it is a living and charming character with emotions, moods, and opinions of its own. This song between mystery and passion is set in a seductive Turin. The main character is a woman who is always poised between disillusionment and the desire to live. Elijah is a leap into the unknown. A foreign voice that is frightening. Though, one own’s conscience is oftentimes the most difficult to understand.

Elijah quando parla

words & music by Andrea Parodi

Zabala - Track 01 - Buon anno fratello

There is a time for every season, and each verse of this song gives it a voice. The solemn winter; reflective, spiritual, like the old age. Spring, the season of childish games, of ancient Mediterranean courtyards; it is childhood, carefree and skinned knees playing football. Summer, the first love, races on the sand, limitless power, and youth. And finally comes fall, the season of poets and songwriters, with its melancholies.

Buon anno fratello

words & music by Andrea Parodi

Panni stesi e barche rovesciate, c’erano passi, balli, era l’estate

C’erano foglie gialle e rosse lungo i viali, c’era il fango sopra i miei stivali
Buon Anno Fratello, Buona Vita Compagno!
